The Broadside Ballads is a collection of songs based on stories, poems and songs dating from the16th through the 18th Century, archived in the National Library of Scotland.

These ballads were typically printed on a single sheet of paper and were sold in public places like market squares, fairs, and outside theatres.

Broadside Ballads one of the earliest forms of mass media, providing news, stories, and entertainment to the general public.

The songs here have been inspired by these text, written and arranged by Alan Alston, James Kirk and Marilyn Carino.

The recordings feature a wide variety of musicians and singers specially selected for the characters in the texts.

These modern voices have re-created a past world of hopes and passions in a way the illuminates the pulsing thread of life in people through th centuries.

This project supported by Creative Scotland.
