As a portrait of an emerging artist, 'The River Sessions' offers a captivating, 'moment in time' snapshot of Chris de Burgh.

Throughout the entirety of the material featured here - both 'in concert' and interview excerpts - the striking impression is of a man on the move, as a person, as a personality and as a musician.

Hearing Chris talk about his life and his songwriting, it's immediately apparent that there is substance, intent, intelligence and humour at work.

Listening to the selection of songs he performs live, so very many of the qualities which have made his music so resonant - the story-telling, the connection with his audience, the vivid insights into his subject matter - are all, already, clearly evident.

Equally obvious is the developing strength and range of his singing voice, at once falsetto and thunderously powerful.

With the benefit of hindsight, and taking all of these observations into account nearly a quarter of a century after the fact, it is perhaps easy to trace and understand the roots of the stuff at the heart of Chris's long and eventful career. It is not all difficult to grasp how it was possible for him to build on and strengthen his craft, to the point where, ultimately, he would explode upon the worldwide arena.
