Folk and Roots musicians come together in what have been called 'the greatest backporch shows ever'. Shetland fiddle virtuoso Aly Bain and dobro ace Jerry Douglas host a Highland gathering of the cream of Nashville, Irish and Scottish talent.

Music directors Jerry Douglas (dobro, lap steel guitar, guitar) and Aly Bain (fiddle, viola) with House Band: Russ Barenberg (guitar, mandolin), John Doyle (guitar, vocals), Nollaig Casey (fiddle, vocals), John McCusker (fiddle, flute, whistles, small guitar), Michael McGoldrick (pipes, flute, whistles), Donald Shaw (accordion, piano, harmonium), Danny Thompson (bass) and James MacKintosh (percussion).

Featuring: Eric Bibb (vocals, guitar), Sam Bush (vocals, mandolin), Phil Cunningham (accordion), Béla Fleck (banjo, vocals), Sarah Jarosz (vocals, hammerhead banjo, guitar), Alison Krauss (vocals, fiddle), Amos Lee (vocals, guitar), Dónal Lunny (bouzouki, vocals), Kathleen MacInnes (vocals), Iain Morrison (vocals, guitar), Jim Murray (guitar), Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh (vocals), Declan O'Rourke (vocals, guitar), Dirk Powell (vocals, fiddle, banjo, accordion), Eddi Reader (vocals) and Sharon Shannon (accordion).

Producer Douglas Eadie writes:

"Eric Bibb, one of the stars of Transatlantic Sessions Five and the first out-and-out bluesman we have featured, grew up in a musical household. One night when he was eleven years old, he went downstairs in his pyjamas to say hello to a rather special guitar-playing visitor and to tell him that he too, young Eric, played guitar. The visitor had a word of advice: 'keep it simple'. That visitor was Bob Dylan...

Learning the same lesson from his years of experience, Sessions director Mike Alexander also keeps things simple, allowing no technical tricks nor fancy movements to come between the viewer/listener and the music. That way the richness of the music and the skills, fun and passions of the musicians and singers come direct, maybe as close as it's possible to get to live music...

And such richness. Jerry and Aly at the musical helm... Our youngest, nineteen year-old Nashville prodigy Sarah Jarosz (a fast learner, Sarah picked up in a morning enough of the language of Eden to be able to join in a Gaelic chorus). Our oldest (unless you count 'Victoria', his even older instrument), legendary bass-player Danny Thompson. In between, some of the truly greats of the bluegrass, Appalachian, Irish and Scottish traditions. We had a ball making Transatlantic Sessions Five and the general consensus is that it's our best yet. We hope you have a ball with it too."
