(August 2008) Eilean Donan Castle * Edinburgh Castle * St Margaret's Chapel * Castle Levan * Glamis Castle * Fort George * Caerlaverock Castle * Fyvie Castle.

A journey through Scotland's historical castles from the three-part Scottish Television series. Excellent footage featuring the castles of Edinburgh, Stirling, Glamis, Levan, Caerlaverock, Eilean Donan, Fort George and more.

Scotland's castles play an important part in the country's history. In the first episode of this fascinating series, we explore Caerlaverock Castle, Edinburgh Castle, Castle Levan and Glamis Castle, the childhood home of Her Majesty the Queen Mother. We also take a look at Fort George in Inverness and we take an in-depth look at Stirling Castle - one of Scotland's Finest.

We visit Eilean Donan Castle on the road to Skye. It remained a neglected ruin for 200 years until Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap returned it to its former glory in 1912.

We also explore majestic Edinburgh Castle - Scotland's most historic building. This instantly recognisable fortress is a powerful nation symbol with a rich mix of architectural styles reflecting the castle's complex history and role as both stronghold and seat of kings.

Castle Levan, overlooking the banks of the River Clyde, was built around 1430. What was once a dismal ruin without a water supply has been turned into a beautiful family home of immense historical significance dominating an enviable setting.

Glamis Castle in Angus, made famous by Shakespeare's Macbeth, has been the family home of the Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne since 1372 when Sir John Lyon was granted the thaneage of Glamis by King Robert II. It has also been visited and lived in by many members of the Scottish and British royal families.

Fort George is the most considerable fortress in Britain. Its garrison buildings provide a fascinating insight into 18th century military life.

Standing guard over the Solway Firth like a silent sentry, Caerlaverock Castle is an impressive landmark in the Nithsdale countryside.

Fyvie Castle in Aberdeenshire now stands as one of the most important historic buildings in Scotland. William the Lion was here in 1211, Alexander II was granted charter here 11 years later and Robert the Bruce dispensed justice in a nearby wood.

Castle Fraser near the river Donnie is one of the grandest of the Scottish towerhouses. Built between 1565 and 1635 it has all the classic details of Scottish baronial architecture. It has the air of a French chateau in which every view is different.

Kinloch Castle on the Hebridean Island of Rum was built in 1897 by George Bullogh, an English playboy.

Culzean Castle on the Ayrshire coast - the architect's Robert Adam's final masterpiece. Over a period of 15 years between 1777 and 1792, he converted a medieval tower house into a magnificent Edwardian home, using battlements as decoration.
