Gael-Linn was the last company in Ireland to make 78 rpm records, on the basis that some of the people who enjoyed traditional music didn’t have electricity in their homes. On these two CDs there are forty-three of these old recordings, played and sung by people who were in their time acknowledged as the masters of their art. They were recorded between 1957 and 1961, and thankfully, some of the people represented are still with us (and still musically active). Among those taking part are Seosamh Ó hÉanaigh, Tommy Reck, Denis Murphy, Johnny Pickering, Paddy Canny, Joe Burke, Willie Clancy and many others. All of the instrumental music is played solo and it’s great to have it available once more.
