This is a simple, modern speed-learning method designed to teach the foundation stage of the practice chanter. Published in Scotland, compiled by Pipe Major Bruce Campbell.

BMW and music sound files are also included on the specially produced CDROM, which also has full notation for seven tunes.

The Highland bagpipe is perhaps the most unique instrument in the world. Its origins are unknown and widely debated, while the instrument and its music are the subject of differing emotions - you really either love them or hate them, there isn't much of an in-between...

Like students of other musical instruuments, the student piper should aim to develop his or her knowledge in all aspects of the art - theory and history as well as, of course, playing. This book is a basic introduction to the playing side of piping, and after completing these preliminary lessons the student piper should then select the relevant tutor books which best suit their own individual requirements.

The actual playing of the bagpipe is not nearly as difficult as it first may seem. Other than a few obvious physical characteristics, the piper must possess a sense of determination, a keenness to practice regularly and methodically, and an ability to absorb the instruction of others.

A word of caution - do not assume that everyone who can play a baggpipe to some degree is a good instructor - just because you can speak and read a book doesn't make you an English language teacher. There is an art to piping instruction and only a small percentage of pipers become good teachers. Because of that, the drop out rate of student pipers who can only manage poor or no instruction is enormous.
